What would you call your ‘style’? Surrealism

What are you currently working on? I’m beginning to design my next painting which will be about the old neighborhood market. Not the supermarket, but the small family owned store that was situated amongst the homes in our neighborhood.

What is a favorite piece of art you created and why? Aloha, Motel. This is a new painting and one of my favorites because it tells the story of a man who works at a lonely job, surrounded by just a few objects.  I have taken those objects, made them larger than life so that others can appreciate the special quality of someone’s seemingly simple life.

What qualities make your art distinctively you?  I try not to study other artists’ work, but choose to tell my stories through images that I have seen throughout my life.  I incorporate two scales in each painting, with the hopes that they help tell the story.

Where do you create?  I have a 1000 sq. ft. studio built on to my home.

When do you create?  Every day.  I start at 8 am and finish at 5 pm.

Do you sketch or keep an idea journal? I sketch out each idea, sometimes small, sometimes to the finished size.

What do you listen to when you create?  I sometimes have the T.V. on in my studio.  If it is an older movie, it sometimes gives me ideas.

What other things do you like to do creatively? I play the bass guitar and have been in a number of rock bands and now a honky tonk band.

Tell us about any commercial art endeavors: I’ve done many commissioned paintings for businesses and private clientele.

What are your passions outside of art?  I love to golf, I help run a non-profit for the arts and I enjoy working on our home.
