Princeton Featured Artist
Watercolor artist and designer Yao Cheng hails from Columbus, Ohio. Although she has been painting and drawing since the age of five, her introduction to watercolor actually began just a few years ago while trying to explore new media and techniques. She fell in love with using watercolor almost immediately, and it has since become her signature painting medium. Watercolor has provided a visual voice for her creative ideas and even inspired her to start her own design studio in 2012.
Best known for her simple, bright, and expressive watercolor style, Yao’s designs and products can be found in select retailers such as West Elm, One Kings Lane, and Domino; in her online shop; and on Etsy. She currently has an online tutorial series with Creativebug and has been featured in renowned publications and blogs such as Southern Living, HGTV Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Style Me Pretty, The House That Lars Built, and Design Love Fest.
Yao Cheng Design is a design studio and online shop where Yao creates bright and beautiful art prints, textiles, and paper goods for the home. She also works with bridal clients to create one-of-a kind wedding invitations. With all of her projects and designs, the focus is always about capturing the immediacy of expressions through color, shapes, and brushstrokes. The emphasis on imperfect brushstrokes and unpredictable colors is what makes her pieces unique and personable.
In her shop, all of the products are carefully sourced and handmade in the USA. Yao Cheng Design cares deeply about creating products that are not only beautiful but also high quality so that you can enjoy them for years to come. She also is a big believer in being eco-friendly, which is why the shop’s packaging uses recyclable materials wherever possible.
